A spinoff of the Dead Or Alive fighting game franchise, Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, was a game basically made for the sole purpose of having sexy female characters bouncing around in skimpy swimsuits.
That's pretty much it.
The game features characters from the fighting game series baring all on the beach. This game was solely created for boys to ogle at women. It is also the first game in the series to receive an M rating solely on the revealing and sexual nature of the girls' outfits.
Other features of the game include a camera which can be moved at any angle to view the girls as they pose provocatively. This game was literally only made to objectify women: a message young boys could do without.
For the developers, this spinoff destroys any chance the game series could have had for redeeming qualities. They could have pulled off a game with a mostly female cast of strong female roles rather than sexy girls in skanky outfits. But now the franchise is uncovered as a series dedicated to objectifying young women, sending young boys unhealthy messages about sex/gender, and making soft-core porn video games.

Dead Or Alive...Or Soft-core Porno
I personally have never owned a game from the franchise, Dead Or Alive, nor have I ever played these games, but I feel that there isn't much more to grasp from this 3D fighting game other than the mostly female (and mostly scantly clad) cast.
I can't imagine this game is as much about beat downs as it is about boobs. I remember a younger version of myself basically only wanting to own one of these games because of the girls with big animated breasts on the box covers. Displaying the game in this way is obviously intentional and used as a strategy to lure in horny teenage boys.
On the other hand, this strategy could be helpful in showing young boys the capabilities of strong women. I'm sure if a feminist made a fighting game, they'd want to have a cast with at least half female characters, and why not let the women flaunt their beauty a bit? It would stick it to the typical, muscley male characters if it were seen that even the "dainty" and "fragile" women were capable of kicking just as much ass as the men can. Plus the girls are better looking anyway.
Sadly, I'm sure it isn't seen this way. I remembered wanting those games when I was a young teenage boy but realizing the sex appeal lure wasn't worth the outcome. This particular series is mostly rated M for Mature. However, M rated games rarely contain nudity or extreme sexual themes. Basically this would mean that buying a Dead Or Alive game would be a tease. Why would anyone expect that a game that bares as much as it will on the cover would be worth buying? What is the real stimulation? I figured that this game is just about as close to pornography as a game will get, so why buy a $60 game when internet porn is free? Would men rather just be teased?
Not that this should be an alternative of course, but there isn't much of a point to a game such as that. A game should be judged more on it's interactivity, ingenuity and innovation with game play and story rather than simply sex appeal.

Family Dinner Picture
My Brand: Vans shoe and clothing company (vans.com)
It's the evening after a school day. All you want to do is have fun, but Magnum P.I. wants you to sit down and have a family dinner. Sure this will connect you to your family and you'll build strong relationships, but wouldn't you rather just grab a burger and go hang out with your friends?
"Come on son! We're having that meat loaf you hate for dinner!", says your mustachioed father figure.
You reply,
"Can I just go hang out with my friends instead, Dad?"
"Lemme think uh NO!", he demands.
You're faced with a tough decision. On one hand, you get free food from people who are kinda legally required to love you and stuff. On the other, you could go play video games with your smelly friends.
"EAT YOUR DAMN MEATLOAF SON."
Yes, your loving family and your life can be lame sometimes.

Soul Caliber II: Femme Fatales and Fatal Attraction
Of the games I've played to this day, the ones that stick out the most are the ones from my middle school days (when my only responsibility was video games). One in particular was a household favorite; Soul Caliber II for the Nintendo Gamecube. Soul Caliber II was a 3-D fighting game, one of the first I had ever played (yeah, I know, but I never owned a PS1 or Tekken).
The game features a gender-varied cast of playable characters. While the cast of characters had a larger portion of male selections, there were several playable female characters. It wasn't uncommon for my brother, my father and I to choose these female characters over the males. Of the female characters available, one in particular, Ivy, was extremely powerful if you practiced her moves enough. She also had some of the most complicated special moves to perform.
While we may have hidden under that explanation, ("My what a challenging character to play!") we really, truthfully chose the female characters because they're hot. I even asked my father why he chose one particular character so often and his answer was as follows: "Cus she was smokin' hot!"
Ivy, pictured on the right, was probably the most scantly clad of all the female characters in the game, and also my father's favorite character. I don't mean to paint him as a total perv, he was spoon fed what other horny kids (if you aren't familiar, this game was rated T for Teens 13+) have been given with similar titles (Dead Or Alive much?).
Another nifty feature of this game allowed players to individually analyze player stats and examine the character's appearance. However, every time you would move the female characters around, their breasts would jiggle. Even the artwork section showed nipples protruding from underneath their costumes. Something tells me this isn't a vital feature of the game. Plus, I'm forced to now question the developers' depictions of females in these games.
I'll admit that I was on the other side of the fence when I was 12, but to view a game that depicts women in such a way today is just sad. If you can look past the sexy clothes and bouncy boobs, there are real characters with real depth to be appreciated. If a player can master the character Ivy, anyone should be impressed, as it is a challenging feat. The content of the actual character is what should be measured in a game, not her cup size.
